A Better Lens at Spanish Football

As the European Under-21 title is safely tucked away and the World Under-20 campaign rumbled on, nobody could question the Spanish system’s success at converting promise into talent. But youth development is a fragmented art, difficult to bring together effectively, and even when things seem to be going well there are still bound to be nagging questions about players you’d like to see progressing more. Players like Sergio Canales.   On the face of it Canales […]

So 42 weeks have come to a close and yet there is still plenty of Segunda futbol to be played.   Let’s back up a bit to the events on Saturday. Villarreal ran out 1-0 winners at home against Almeria with a Jonathan Periera goal sealing the deal. Congrats to Submarino fans everywhere for promotion back to the Primera. 13 months ago the visual of Villarreal president Fernando Roig slumping down the steps at El […]

As discussed many times previously, the use of the word ‘final’ gets used alot by futbol managers and players when talking up a big game. I’m usually one to reject such a sentiment, however, Saturday’s Villarreal-Almeria has every right to be labeled as a true ‘final. It all comes down to one game. A singular confrontation between two teams level on points after 41 hardened weeks. And my God, it’s beautiful, isn’t it?   Good news […]

After 41 weeks of blood, sweat and accusations of ‘maletines’, we arrive at the final week of the Segunda season and what a treat for all of us that an absolute monster of an affair is on the docket.   Villarreal-Almeria. Winner gets promoted to the Primera; loser is in the playoffs where anything can happen.   The Submarino downed Barcelona B over the weekend 3-0 with an emphatic performance at the Mini Estadi, which […]

escudo Malaga

It was the penultimate game of the season and just before kick off some of the journalists were preparing for possible outcomes. If Málaga won, they had Champions League football. One AS journalist who was working on the Málaga section of the paper already had his title, ‘Champions, Oé, Oé’. About 90 minutes later he deleted it as other journalist mocked him for jumping the gun. A week later Pellegrini’s men sealed 4th and the same […]

There is just something about reaching the ‘Jornada 40′ mark that gives the Segunda an ‘every ball matters’ type of feel. For some teams the whole ‘final’ mentality has been in the making but with just two weeks remaining in the season, there is zero room for error at both ends of the table.   Let’s start at the top. Elche have already booked their Primera place but the second automatic promotion spot is very much […]

Some clarity has come to the Segunda table, especially when it comes to promotion. Elche can actually stamp their ticket to the Primera with a win and if Girona and Alcorcon fail to win over the weekend. The Ilicitanos effusively celebrated last weekend’s win at Villarreal and with good reason. It was a Primera-esque effort in a 2-3 win. Now they host Barca B with a return to the promised land in reach HOME WIN.   […]

A weekend in Orlando at Disney World prevented me from writing up a Segunda Focus piece last week so I am rested and ready to get back to business. Actually, I am nowhere near rested. Disney World is stressful if you are the parent of a four year old who’s there with her six year old cousin. You expect it to be this magical place when in the end you spend most of the time in […]

Different teams peak at different times throughout the Segunda season. Remember last season when Sabadell and Guadalajara were both set for promotion after the first few weeks? Yeah, exactly. Villarreal has certainly had their struggles this season but have found their stride at the right time. The Submarino threw up a six spot at Mirandes last week and are playing lights-out futbol with 11 goals in their last two games. Now just one point off […]

Maybe it’s a little early to jump to conclusions but after last week’s 3-1 loss at Numancia, Elche have dropped back-to-back matches for the first time this season. Their promotion aspirations are nowhere near being in trouble, but it is still little disconcerting if you are an Ilicitano to see losses to Mirandes and Numancia. But take a step back and remember past Segunda leaders, like Betis during the 2010-2011 campaign who lost five matches in a […]
