A Better Lens at Spanish Football

The Spanish National Team have released their new away kit, just in time for the Euros and friendly against Venezuela.  It looks a little like Uruguay’s kit no?  ‘La Azul Celeste’.  The kit pays homage to past glory with the inscription inside the neck “CAMPEONES DE EUROPA (EUROPEAN CHAMPIONS) 1966/2008″. The shirt has a dark blue band a la River Plate-ish and a very large shield.  The collar is round in a classic style.  The shorts will not be […]

Craig Williams (twitter:  @onlyscotinsama) is back to give praise to the often under appreciated Sergio Busquets.   Barcelona’s home win against Real Betis marked a milestone 100th game for midfielder Sergio Busquets in the colors of the azulgrana, one that, at least by my reckoning, represents a cause for small celebration.   When you think Barcelona you think of Messi, you think of Xavi, Iniesta, Villa and Pique, even Puyol. Only after that do you think of Busquets. […]

The IFFHS has come out with their year end list of best of the best enganches.  Once again Xavi Hernandez leads the pack for the 4th year in a row.  Xavi beats out  Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Iniesta, Ozil, Xabi Alonso among others.  Spanish Football is all about the creative midfield so I don’t think this list comes as a big surprise.  Some interesting facts: The list has 5 Spanish Internationals and 7 players from Real Madrid and Barcelona. New to the list […]

With the January transfer window near, Guest writer Teresa Muñoz (@terrymunoz) joins us to take a look at one of starlets of the Bundesliga that could be heading to Spain. Enjoy! If you follow European football, specifically the Bundesliga, then you’ve probably heard of Mario Götze. Götze is a young German footballer who plays for Borussia Dortmund as an attacking midfielder. Although he’s fairly young, just 19 years old, Götze has already been linked with transfers to various clubs […]

This probably is the biggest game played by England at Wembley in terms of the opponent, the reigning European and World Champion, Spain. The sort of game you would die for to see in a serious competition like the Euro or the World Cup. Instead we have to settle for a friendly. But that shouldnt take away the fact that some of the world most skillful players as well as the most recognizable players will take part in this game. We […]

Finally Real Madrid, at the last minute, decided to have a training practice open to the public in the morning. It was on a first come, first serve basis and nearly 500 Madridistas were in attendance, a lot of families and fanaticos. Los Blancos also allowed the press to attend the entire time, which was very nice indeed. Rumor has it there will be one more, possibly next Thursday before they leave LA, so get their early! Before the training, […]

You probably have figured out that Forza Futbol has been following Real Madrid in LA in full force, there are three of us taking turns going to training, taking photos, meeting people, attending the press conferences, meeting fans and reporting on the pre-season. We are just living the life and loving it. I apologize to the non Real Madrid fans. I know this is a La Liga and Spanish Football website, but just bear with us over the next two […]

A few months ago, I heard the news that the Spain National team would come to the US to play the national team in Foxboro Massachusetts and well, I just had to be there. The last time that I had seen La Roja live was during the group stages of the Germany World Cup 2006 when they played Tunisia and Saudi Arabia. So it had been too long and I really wanted to see los Campeones del Mundo, especially those […]

In honor of the 2011 Winter Transfer Market, I thought that I would do some anoraking and find out who are the most expensive Spanish Player transfers ever. Some of them are the well know Spanish Internationals, others hit the highest heights, but fell tragically short over the span of their careers. So who are they? 1) El Niño Fernando Torres from Liverpool to Chelsea – 58M – 2011 The new obssession of Roman Abramovich was purchased this January for […]

Continuing our look back at the year that was 2010, IFFHS (International Football Federation of History and Statistics), based out of Germany, has come out with various other accolades. This one is near and dear to my heart, Best Playmaker in the World, the creator, the maestro in the midfield. Based on points Xavi Hernandez is a cut above the rest. Followed by his partner in crime Andres Iniesta, and then double Balon d’Or winner Messi. .1. Xavi Hernández (ESP/Barcelona) […]
