A Better Lens at Spanish Football

Sevilla host Freiburg at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on Thursday evening hoping to continue the winning start to their Europa League campaign.

The Spaniards opened with a 1-2 victory over Estoril however have been on a poor run of form in the Spanish league. The Andalusia side currently stand 14th in league having only won once in their last six games.

Their opponents have suffered a worse start to their league campaign and only managed a draw against FC Slovan Liberec having blown a 2-0 lead in their opening Europa league tie. Freiburg, who drew 1-1 home to European champions Bayern Munich at the end of August, have since slipped to 17th in the Bundesliga, and are yet without a win – losing four times in their seven league games.

Sevilla’s latest game was a 1-1 draw against Champions League side Real Sociedad, a result which will give them a confidence boost ahead of this European encounter.

Key battles

Kevin Gameiro vs Centre backs

Since his arrival from Paris Saint Germain in the summer, Gameiro was given the tough task to replace the Spanish international Alvaro Negredo. A very intelligent striker who has many strengths, the Frenchman is starting to look good for Sevilla. After his man of the match performance against Malaga in early September where he grabbed a brace, he then scored the winner coming off the bench in the opening Europa league game against Estoril.

Gameiro will be a handful to the Freiburg defence, and if the German’s league defensive record is anything to go by, Sevilla’s front man will be crucial.

Predicted line-ups

Beto; Navarro, Cala, Figueiras, Alberto; Marin, Iborra, Rakitic, Trochowski, M’Bia; Gameiro.

Baumann; Sorg, Fallou, Ginter, Gunter; Schmid, Fernandes, Schuster, Coquelin; Freis, Mehmedi.

Predicted result: Sevilla 2-0 Freiburg
