It seems that Villarreal midfielder Marcos Senna keeps having to face the music far too often to issue an apology to the fans for a recent performnace by the team. He did so admirably after the season finale after the club dropped and did so again after the weekend’s 5-0 loss at Real Madrid Castilla. Not exactly what new manager Marcelino had in mind. Villarreal are now 10th. Ouch.
It was wet and muddy yet again in El Bierzo and the pitch at El Toralin was a disaster (perhaps intentionally?), but nevertheless Ponferradina held Elche to a 1-1 draw. After last week’s loss at home to Lugo, this is a good result for Ponfe while Elche can take solace in the fact that they are now unbeaten in their last 10.
Usually I get cheered up by a Mirandes goal but their 55th minute strike in Huesca on Sunday was a bit sad mainly because I had predicted a goalless draw. Anyhow, Carlos Puoso’s men made me look bad winning 0-1 and Huesca now sink deeper in the table to 20th.
It wasn’t a nine goal thriller but Almeria and Barcelona B still played to an entertaining draw, this one ending 2-2. Almeria looked good for the win but then just three minutes from time Verza misplayed a clearance that was played into his own net to give the Baby Blaugrana the point.
It’s time to start paying attention to Guadalajara goalkeeper Razak. Ever since the hulking from Ghana took over between the sticks for the manchegos, they have been a much better side. Guadalajara looked great beating Alcorcon who once again fared poorly away from home, 3-0 the final. It’s a shame Guadalajara started off so poorly because with this form, they could have been in the playoff mix had they started better.
In a weird way ever since Cordoba were eliminated by Barcelona in the Copa, they have been playing great futbol, as evidenced by their 5-0 win over Murcia. Five different scoreres for Cordoba including Italian stud Renella. Big time issues in Murcia right now.
Speaking of up-ticks, the good times continue on at Hercules as they piled it on against Lugo, winning 3-0. The former fiesteros ran rampant over the Galciians as Portillo added yet another goal. Hercules no longer in last place!
For the third time this year Las Palmas defeated Racing, this time with a 1-0 win out on the islands. Vitolo scored in the 27th for the Pio Pio who are very much in the playoff mix. Racing now dead last and looking Segunda B bound.
Girona claim that things are all good in their camp but results suggest otherwise as the they fell to their Catalan neighbors from Sabadell 4-1. Lucky for Girona that Alcorcon and Almeria have failed to take advantage of this slump. Two goals for Hidalgo to put Sabadell in the final playoff spot.
Not much doing with Sporting’s 1-1 draw versus Numancia. Disappointing effort frankly from the Asturians in front of the home crowd in Gijon. Meanwhile for Numancia they’ll take a rare away point when they can get it. Sandoval raising a few eyebrows with five changes which ended up making no difference.
We conclude with recreativo shaking off some doldrums and beating a beleaguered Xerez 1-0. Esteban Vigo’s side is playing about as poorly as Racing of late. Two goals for Recre’s Chuli who pnly seems to score in spurts. He’ll probably have three next week and then not score again for another three months.
