Monday is here and Juan Carlos Mandia as far as I know still has a job which is a bit surprising considering the talk prior to the Villarreal-Hercules match on Sunday centered around a ‘win-or-else’ ultimatum for the Hercules boss. The match at El Madrigal ended in favor of the home team 1-0 thanks to a Fernando Cavenaghi goal in the first half helping Villarreal stay in second place in the Segunda table.
For already the second time this season Girona threw a five-spot up on the scoreboard as they thoroughly dominated Las Palmas at home 5-0. A mere 3,200 were at Montlivi to see it which is a tad disappointing because Girona are a very entertaining team to watch. A golazo from Jofre sealed it early in the second half making it 3-0 and they would add another two.
It took just eight minutes for Sabadell to overcome a two goal deficit but it came in breathtaking fashion as the Catalans pulled out a 2-3 win at Real Madrid Castilla in the Friday nighter. In just two weeks Sabadell’s Anibal has become the Segunda pichichi after a hat trick last week and another two goals on Friday. He may be grabbing the headlines but the genius behind it all has been Manu Lanzarote. His return to the squad a week ago has made Sabadell a much better side and suddenly Lanzarote and Anibal are the ‘pareja de moda’ en in the Segunda.
If the season ended today, Huesca would be in the playoffs….. Just let that sink in for a while. Ok, good. Yes, the boys from northern Aragon traveled to Lugo and came away with all three points in a 2-4 win over the Galicians. Things looked bad early on as Nacho Novo left early due to injury but an opportunistic Huesca offense did the trick giving the visitors the win and a current seventh place standing (Barcelona B are sixth).
As for the just-mentioned Baby Blaugrana, it was a little more difficult than anticipated as Barcelona B had to come back from a goal down to beat a pesky Ponferradina side 2-1.
Mirandes might have picked up another road point at a very good Murcia side but they will be ruing their missed chance at all three as an 89th goal helped Murcia equalise after being down 0-2 earlier.
For a short while on Saturday there was good cheer in Santander as Racing picked up their first win of the season in relatively easy fashion downing Recreativo 3-0. US international Carlos Bocanegra made the gameday 18 but did not play. Not alot of people on hand at the Sardinero though.
Their neighbors to the west, Sporting, remain winless as they went down in defeat in second half stoppage time to Elche who won on a 91st minute penalty courtesy of Edu Albacar. Tough break for the Asturians who played the league leaders tough. Elche are perfect through their first five games with 15 points.
Friend of the Segunda Focus and overall good guy, Juli, scored the gamewinner for Alcorcon as the madrilenos defeated Cordoba 2-1. Alcorcon are right there with Girona with 10 points and are in the playoff zone. Looks like there has been zero drop-off with the Anquela departure and that Pepe Bordalas is pulling all the right strings.
Talk of firing Esteban Vigo calmed down for another week as Xerez used a goal in each half to down Numancia 2-0. Poor effort from the sorianos while a massive win for the azulino who had lost three staright.
It’ll be curious to see what the talk is this week in Guadalajara after Carlos Terrazas’ bunch lost yet again, this time in decisive faction to Almeria who soundly defeated the manchegos 4-0. It is only Guadalajara that is keeping Sporting out of the Segunda basement. The boys from La Mancha have just a single point while the Gijon outfit sit next to last with two points.
