Sam Marsden is back with snippets, humour and interesting things from La Primera Liga, Spain. Enjoy!
Heard of ‘The Chilean Gattuso’? Scrap that. Heard of a Chilean named Gary? Strange name for a South American, albeit one which is owned by a diminutive, tenacious Sevilla midfielder.
Gary Alexis Medel Soto was born in Santiago in August 1987 and was named after Gary Lineker. It is not up front though where Medel excels. As his nickname above suggests it is as a defensive midfielder.
The ‘Pitbull’ started his career at Universidad Catolica as a right back untill converting to central midfield. He weighed in with with twelve goals in his eighty appearances at the club.
He impressed enough for both Marcelo Bielsa to call him into the national side and, eventually, for Boca to take him on loan. It was a move which Medel described as a ‘dream move’.
At Boca he created a fans favourite status courtesy of a brace in a 2-0 win over River in the ‘Superclasico’. He also demonstrated his fiery side by acquiring several red cards, including one in a later ‘Superclasico’.
European clubs pricked their ears up at the 2010 World Cup, and it was Sevilla where the 5’7ft Chilean eventually emerged in January 2011. He’s now a mainstay in Michel’s side and even scoring a few goals in La Liga.
futbolgrande are interested to see his career progress…
