Transfer Rumors: Mario Götze to Real Madrid?

With the January transfer window near, Guest writer Teresa Muñoz (@terrymunoz) joins us to take a look at one of starlets of the Bundesliga that could be heading to Spain. Enjoy!

If you follow European football, specifically the Bundesliga, then you’ve probably heard of Mario Götze. Götze is a young German footballer who plays for Borussia Dortmund as an attacking midfielder. Although he’s fairly young, just 19 years old, Götze has already been linked with transfers to various clubs including Arsenal, Manchester United, and Real Madrid.

Götze is a product of Dortmund’s youth academy, which he entered at 8 years old. When he was 15 years old, Götze made his debut forDortmund’s under 17 team. The following year, he played with the under 19 team. He made his Bundesliga debut with Dortmund’s first team in November 2009, in a 0-0 draw against FSV Mainz 05.  Dortmund had an incredible 2010-2011 season, in which they won the Bundesliga title. Götze had a big part in this. In 29 starts, he scored six goals and had 15 assists.

Götze is also part of the German NT. Before joining the senior team, he was part of the U-15, U-16, U-17, and U-21 teams. As part of the U-17 team, Götze won the UEFA European Championship in 2009. That year, he was also part of the U-17 German team that made it to the Quarter Finals of the U-17 World Cup. Götze was first called up to the senior team in November 2010 against Sweden. He became the youngest player on the German NT team since Uwe Seeler. On August 10, 2011, Götze scored his first top flight International goal and at age 19 years old and 68 days, became the youngest goal scorer in over 50 years.

Why are so many clubs interested in him? He’s a very talented footballer. Götze is known for his creativity, speed, and technical skill. Other strengths include the fact that he’s two-footed and has a good eye for goals. However, he is still young and learning the game. He occasionally makes bad passes and isn’t the biggest player physically. His strengths far outweigh any weaknesses he has, and any club would be lucky to have him.

Götze would be a good fit for Real Madrid because he would fit in with their style of play, which is going forward and attacking. Another positive thing about him is the fact that he’s a very young player. Real Madrid is always looking for players who can either score goals for the club or create chances for the other players to score goals.  According to Dortmund, Götze would not be available during the January transfer window and if Real Madrid were to make an offer for him, it would have to wait until summer. Although he is a talented footballer, it would be hard for him to get playing time, considering Real Madrid already has many talented midfielders such as Xabi Alonso, Mesut Ozil, Kaka, and Angel di Maria, so should it happen, it would most likely be a long term signing with an eye towards the future…
