Here is a summary of the La Liga transfers in terms of the net amount spent by each team in the summer of 2011.
Conclusions:
- It is evident that most teams sold more than they bought
- Málaga, Barcelona and Real Madrid spent the most.
- It is notable that the 2nd tier teams like Villarreal, Valencia, Sevilla and Atlético all tried to balance their books. Sold more than they bought. This could mean bad news for those who lament the gap between the Big Two and the rest.
- On the same note this could mean good news for the competitiveness between teams in positions 3 through position 7 or 8.
- Quite a few teams have spent ZERO, mostly surviving on loans, another Ley Concursal tool or loop hole, which is very disconcerting.
- Another positive note, a good amount of youth team players were promoted to the first team. (Athletic Bilbao 6, Mallorca & Sporting Gijón 5, Valencia, Villarreal, Real Zaragoza 4) A testament to La Cantera.
- Investments in the transfer market this summer have been led primarily by five teams: Atletico Madrid (71 million), Barcelona (60), Malaga (58), Madrid (55) and Valencia (32), in order, which account for 83% of total expenditure.
- Atletico for the first time, which leads the Spanish clubs, has spent more money on transfers, thanks to the most expensive transfer in the summer: Kun Aguero to Manchester City for 45 million.
- 8 clubs have not exceeded 3M in player signings, while 64% have been at no cost or loans of total expenditures.
- Barçelona has profited 21M in the sale of youth players this year. A record amount for the club. Nearly 87% of total sales
- Rayo, Betis, Zargaoza, Mallorca, and Racing all in bankruptcy have signed 41 players in aggregate.
- Espanyol and Getafe have not reinvested all of their monies from player sales.
- Granada leads the teams with most players added 14, where as Athletic Bilbao 1, Real Sociedad & Barçelona 2, have the least amount
*Note all “Buys” include escalators. Criteria for promoted youth team is that the player plays 100% with the first team and no longer with the Second division or reserves.

More conclusions based on the buying and selling patterns:
- 4 teams accounted for 72% of all buying - Atlético, Málaga, Barcelona and Real Madrid
- Atlético is the Tottenham Hotspur of La Liga. Lots of buying, almost equal amount of selling. Wheeling and dealing. Addition by subraction and subtraction by addition.
- Málaga only bought, didnt sell any.
And lastly here is how the La Liga teams promoted their youth players from their canteras. Athletic as usual is at the top of the pile owing to their Basque only policy. Mallorca and Sporting come next with 5 each followed by Valencia and Zaragoza with 4 each.
